150 Words About . . .TRICK R’ TREAT (2007)

by James Newman

Trick r’ Treat is a love letter to every horror fan’s favorite holiday.  You can almost smell the autumn leaves and the mouth-watering aroma of caramel apples in the October air.  The film’s non-linear narrative is constructed from several Halloween-related stories, but the tales in this anthology weave in and out of one another in a structure inspired by Pulp Fiction.  While it’s never truly “scary”, you’ll get a bag overflowing with macabre goodies of every flavor:  a serial killer, a sexy werewolf coven, creepy kids, and Brian Cox (Manhunter, The Autopsy of Jane Doe).  Check it out, and remember what it was like to sit around a campfire with your buddies, telling ghost stories and scaring yourselves silly.

Director Michael Dougherty followed this one with Krampus, another holiday-themed horror flick.  It ultimately just made me want to watch Trick ‘r Treat again.  Especially for those sexy werewolves I mentioned.
