150 Words About . . .BRAM STOKER’S DRACULA (1992)
By James Newman
Say what you will about Keanu’s accent. And I’ll admit Winona wasn’t great. But there’s a lot more good than bad to talk about in regards to Francis Ford Coppola’s version of Dracula.
We got Gary Oldman as the Count, dude – what else needs to be said?
Here we see Dracula in various incarnations throughout his (un)life: as a young warlord fighting in the Crusades, as a super-cool lady-killer in a top hat and blue-tinted shades . . . and as a decrepit geezer straight outta Bram Stoker’s book, a pale, thirsty creature who truly looks like something that lives in the shadows, loathing the light and all that is holy.
Oh, and who could forget Sir Anthony Hopkins as the vampire hunter himself, Professor Van Helsing!
BTW, the scene in Lucy’s crypt gives me goosebumps to this day. Remember when that shooting-in-reverse trick was fresh and new? Truly unsettling.
