150 Words About . . .THE MIST (2007)
By James Newman
Directed by Frank Darabont (The Shawshank Redemption, The Green Mile), The Mist might be the best Stephen King adaptation ever made.
A group of people are trapped in a supermarket after a storm hits town . . . a storm that conjured forth Lovecraftian beasts with an appetite for human flesh. But The Mist isn’t just about cool monsters. It’s about what happens when things go bad and scared people need a scapegoat. In this case, half of those fearful folks choose to follow the ravings of religious fanatic Mrs. Carmody (the always-amazing Marcia Gay Harden), and before long the “monsters” are inside the Food House too.
Featuring the most depressing ending since Brad Pitt wanted to know what was in that box, The Mist is my favorite American-made horror film of the last quarter-century . . . but every time I watch it I swear it’ll be the last.
