150 Words About . . .THE LOVED ONES (2009)
by James Newman
Lola asks Brent to the prom. He politely turns her down. He’ll live (just barely) to regret it. Australia’s The Loved Ones is a nerve-wracking descent into terror that’s been called “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre meets Pretty In Pink” (!). Brent’s prom night will be memorable for all the wrong reasons – while the worst thing his classmates have to worry about is getting caught spiking the punchbowl, Brent’s date carries a syringe filled with bleach and she can’t wait to use it. Thanks to a devious performance from Robin McLeavy (Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter), Lola ranks among horror’s all-time greatest villains. She’s strangely sympathetic at times, but no way in hell would you ever want this psycho to turn her sights on you.
The Loved Ones somehow turns Kasey Chambers’ pop-country tune “Not Pretty Enough” into a song that will give you goosebumps. Watch it, then tell me I’m wrong.
