150 Words About . . .CHRISTINE (1983)

by James Newman

John Carpenter’s adaptation of Stephen King’s thirteenth novel holds a special place in this aging nerd’s heart.  Like its main character, Arnie Cunningham (Keith Gordon, who works behind the camera these days, directing episodes of shows like Fargo and Better Call Saul ), I was bullied a lot as a teen.  Unlike Arnie, I never fell in love with a car that took on a demonic life of its own and killed every meathead who made my life a living hell.

Probably for the best, since Arnie pays a terrible price and along the way becomes something that his friends and family no longer recognize.

This one’s a tragic tale of romance as much as it is a cool horror flick that could only have come from the ‘80s.  Make it a triple feature with Cronenberg’s The Fly and The Dead Zone and you’ll never have so much fun being sad.
