150 Words About . . .DOCTOR SLEEP (2019)
By James Newman
Leave it to Mike Flanagan (Midnight Mass) to give fans a sequel to The Shining that works as an adaptation of King’s own follow-up and a continuation of Kubrick’s classic film.
Danny Torrance (Ewan McGregor) is plagued by the same demons that once tormented his father. But he finds something to live for when he meets a child whose powers make his own look like parlor tricks. Seems there’s a roving gang of psychic vampires who feed on “special” kids, and little Abra’s on the menu.
If things weren’t bad enough, those pesky ghosts from the Overlook (yep, that includes the cackling crone from Room 237) are still hanging around, waiting for Dan to let his guard down.
Don’t, ahem, sleep on this one. It ranks among my favorite flicks of the last quarter-century, and features one of the genre’s all-time greatest villains in sexy Rose the Hat (Rebecca Ferguson).
