150 Words About . . .47 METERS DOWN (2017)

By James Newman

Claire Holt and the always-likeable Mandy Moore play sisters cage-diving in Mexico.  The winch that holds their cage suddenly breaks and they plummet to the ocean floor . . . where they’re surrounded by ravenous sharks, their air supply running low.

It’s easy to rip this one to shreds like the aforementioned predators if you know anything about the subject matter.  I used to scuba-dive with my dad as a teen and I heard horror stories about “the bends” (decompression sickness caused by nitrogen bubbles in your blood, if memory serves; it’s a nasty side-effect of ascending to the surface too quickly).  So I know these two would probably suffer painful deaths even after surviving the sharks.

100% scientifically accurate it’s not, but 47 Meters Down had me gasping for air a few times.  That makes it an effective genre film deserving recommendation to fright fans searching for cheap thrills.
