150 Words About . . .SYNCHRONIC (2019)

by James Newman

Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead’s Synchronic is easily my favorite film of the last few years, and this is coming from someone who has been admittedly less enamored with their work than most genre fans.  It stars Anthony Mackie (The Falcon and the Winter Soldier) as a paramedic who becomes obsessed with a new designer drug after finding it on the scene of several inexplicable deaths.  Seems the drug enables its user to travel through time.  Cool, huh?  Sure, unless you get stuck there.  When that happens to someone our hero cares about, he decides to do something selfless for once in his life.

Synchronic is a near-perfect sci-fi/horror film, but think The Butterfly Effect more than something like The Terminator.  Expect a few trippy effects, but overall this is a story of friendship and the sacrifices we’re willing to make for those we love.  Synchronic gets my highest recommendation.
